Anyone who works at or visits the Nether Providence Township Police Department is reminded of the late Detective Sgt. Raymond L. White. His photo and glass-encased dress blouse are displayed on a wall in the lobby, just outside the chief's office.
It has been forty-one years since Sgt. White’s line-of-duty death. He has not been forgotten.
Sgt. White was only 54 years old when he suffered a fatal heart attack on April 10, 1983, while collecting evidence at a homicide scene. He dedicated 25 years of service to the department.
Today, NPPD Traffic Safety Officer Kevin Smith joined Fallen Heroes Wreath Program members to formally honor Detective White this holiday season..
The Fallen Heroes Wreath Program recognizes the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. This initiative produces and places wreaths at the final resting places of these brave officers during the winter holiday season.
As organization members placed the wreath at Sgt. White’s grave at Edgewood Memorial Park, Officer Smith, in white gloves, saluted his fallen brother.
Officer Smith said participating in the annual wreath-laying program over the past several years has been “a profound honor.”
