Today at 10:49 a.m., the Nether Providence Police Department was called to Strath Haven High School, located in the 200 block of South Providence Road, for a report of a student possibly with a handgun in his backpack. The school officials immediately placed the school on lockdown and notified the police, who responded, along with several neighboring police departments. The student was identified, and following a brief search of the building, his backpack was located in a classroom, and a replica handgun was recovered. Police continued to search the building and located the student a short time later, and he was taken into custody. Following an assessment of the school, the school building was deemed to be safe, and school officials lifted the lockdown. The student’s name is not being released because of his age, and the appropriate charges will be filed in Juvenile Court.
