Pennsylvania's “Move Over Law” is aimed at protecting first responders on the side of roads. The "Move Over Law" calls for drivers to move into to the left lane when approaching an emergency vehicle with lights flashing -- including police officers, EMS crews, fire and tow truck drivers -- or a disabled vehicle with proper indicators set up. If the driver can't safely move into the outer lane on a highway or multilane road, than the driver needs to slow to 20 mph under the speed limit.
The two PA Troopers recently killed become the 17th and 18th United States Emergency Responders struck and killed in 2022 (7 Law Enforcement, 6 Tow Truck Operators, 5 Firefighters) and are the 154th and 155th Pennsylvania Emergency Responders struck and killed. Although speed and alcohol looks like factors in this recent tragic incident, it is a reminder that officers and other first responders are in harms way just doing “normal” events. Traffic stops, traffic control, towing vehicles, medical emergencies, fires etc., can put emergency responders in harms way of being struck and killed. PLEASE, slow down, move over, save a life!
