As students return to school, the Sharon Hill Borough Police Department is reminding drivers, parents, and students to prioritize school bus safety to ensure a safe start to the academic year.
"With the new school year underway, our number one priority is keeping our children safe—especially as they travel to and from school each day," said Richard Herron, Jr, Chief of Police. "We urge all drivers to be extra cautious in school zones and around school buses."
Key Safety Reminders for Drivers:
Stop for school buses: It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children when its red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended.
Watch for children: Kids may dart into the road unexpectedly. Stay alert near bus stops, schools, and residential areas.
Obey speed limits in school zones and be prepared to stop at any time.
Avoid distractions: Put down your phone and stay focused while driving.
Safety Tips for Parents and Students:
Arrive at the bus stop early and stay away from the curb.
Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop and for the driver to signal before boarding or crossing.
Always cross in front of the bus where the driver can see you, never behind it.
Remain seated and follow the driver’s instructions while on the bus.
"Our officers will be increasing patrols in school zones and bus routes over the coming weeks to help enforce these rules and protect our children," added Chief Herron.
Let’s work together to ensure a safe and successful school year for all.
